El Salto is a riverside swimming hole and rope-swing spot associated with the Río Fortuna near La Fortuna, Costa Rica. It is a natural river setting, and conditions can change.
Review the Instituto Meteorológico Nacional forecast and current Comisión Nacional de Emergencias advisories. Follow local restrictions and instructions. Rain upstream can affect a river even when the weather at your location appears clear.
Water colour, floating leaves, a view of the mountains or advice from another visitor cannot establish that a river is safe to enter. Do not wait for a visible warning sign before respecting an alert or leaving a riverbank.
The presence of a swing does not establish the condition of its rope or anchor, the water depth, or the absence of submerged obstacles. This article does not recommend jumping, diving or using the swing. If conditions are uncertain, choose another activity.
Stay out of flooded or fast-flowing water and do not attempt to cross it. Follow official instructions and avoid the riverbank if water is rising. A sudden river surge is commonly called a cabeza de agua in Costa Rica.
These precautions cannot remove the risks of a natural river. For a planned outing, ask a qualified local guide about suitable options and the day’s conditions.
